We spent 3 days and 2 Nights on Fraser Island using 4X4 jeeps to get around driving on sand and on off road tracks.
There are a lot of photos to upload so here is a brief breakdown of the trip
Day 1.
- Jen drove us across to the barge onto Fraser Island, once we landed she drove us up the beach to the drop off point for the trailer with all our gear.
- It was then my turn to drive. I took a bumpy and Steep off road track halfway to Lake McKenzie, giving Eimear a turn for the second half of the trip.
- We spent a few hours swimming in Lake McKenzie.
- Katie then drove us to a rainforest walk where a lot of the natives held as a sacred ground as well as a tree they buried their Shaymen inside.
- Steph then drove us back to pick up the trailer.
- Nils from the second group then took over to drive us to the shipwreck and on to the campsite where we had a BBQ and an early night.
Day 2.
- We all jumped into Brett the tour guide's car and he drove us to all the rest of the locations while the second group took their turns driving the second Jeep.
- We started off at Champaign Pools, one of the only safe places to get into the sea on Fraser as it was sheltered by rocks so stopped the riptide pulling you out or the large shark population getting in.
- Following this we went to Indian Head, one of the three spots on the Island which was made of rock and the site of the massacre of the natives when the European settlers took over the Island.
- Then most importantly, Lunch.
- Next on to Eli Creek, a fresh water river down to the sea with sand filtered crystal clear water which acted like a rapids stream except without the danger of rocks so we could just lie out in it and get carried down the stream.
- To finish the days activities we went back to camp and picked up sandboards and walked out to a large desert area. It looked like being on a different planet. We then sandboarded the dunes.
- We finished up here watching a sunset and went back to camp for dinner. Spag Bol!!!
Day 3.
- Up early to pack up camp and then drive off to Lake Wabby. It was 2.4km walk to the lake and the same back but worth it once there.
- We then got lunch and took a few group snaps then headed back to the mainland.
